Research Interests: Microrobotics for medical applications, biohybrid approaches harnessing the functionalities of sperm cells and biological components, wirelessly controlled bioinspired artificial microrobots via magnetic fields, soft robots, and 3D bioprinting of muscle tissue. 

Hamed Shahsavan

Assistant Professor, Chemical Engineering 

Research Interests: Development of soft and programmable materials and their applications in the design of mobile soft robots, functional devices, and artificial biological organisms; small-scale fabrication and assembly; responsive smart materials. 

Shirley Tang

Professor, Chemistry; Associate Dean of Science 

Research Interests: Nanotechnology, creation of materials and devices based on graphene and carbon nanotubes for biomedical applications, biomolecule-assisted nanomaterial self-assembly, and the health/environmental effects of engineered nanomaterials. 

Mahla Poudineh

Associate Professor; Electrical and Computer Engineering; Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Health Monitoring BioNano Devices 

Research Interests: Bio-sensing technologies for therapeutic and diagnostic applications, microfluidic-based integrated devices, implantable micro-devices for cancer treatment, circulating tumor cell phenotypic characterization, stem cell profiling, and silicon micro-machining for bio-MEMS and bio-NEMS devices. 

Parsin Reza

Associate Professor, Systems Design Engineering; Research Chair in Biomedical Imaging

Research Interests: Biomedical optics, medical imaging and devices, image processing, machine learning, photoacoustic remote sensing (PARS) microscopy, capacitive micromachined ultrasonic transducers (CMUT), multi-scale functional/molecular photoacoustic tomography, and optical coherence tomography (OCT). 

Henry Shum

Associate Professor, Applied Mathematics 

Research Interests: Modeling and simulating microscale fluidic systems, biological fluid dynamics, microorganism motility, bio-inspired microrobotic swimmers, chemomechanical coupling, synthetic chemical reaction networks, and intercellular chemical signaling.  

Carolyn Ren

Professor, Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering; Canada Research Chair in Droplet Microfluidics and Lab-on-a-Chip Technology 

Research Interests: Fundamental microfluidics and nanofluidics, microfluidic chip (Lab-on-a-Chip) technology for biological, chemical, and medical diagnosis/analysis, soft robotics, and battery-powered wearable microfluidic systems.   

Behrad Khamesee

Professor, Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering 

Research Interests: Micromanipulation using magnetic levitation; magnetically driven medical microrobots for drug delivery and microsurgery; electromagnetic actuators; smart structures; energy harvesting; and biomechanics/prosthetics. 

Alfred Yu

Professor, Electrical and Computer Engineering; Associate Vice-President, Partnerships, Entrepreneurship and Commercialization 

Research Interests: Next-generation medical ultrasound imaging algorithms, high-performance beamforming platforms, flow phantom design, and therapeutic ultrasound.

Andrew Laing

Research Interests: Musculoskeletal biomechanics related to human health, mobility, and injury prevention, specifically focusing on the effects of advanced age.
